WIZO Succot Tour 2015

A great day out packed with amazing WIZO and Israel experiences to savor.

IMG 4261A small but spirited group of visitors, an eclectic mix of newcomers and veteran WIZO activists coming from near (Germany, UK, Finland) and far (Guatemala, South Africa) enjoyed an exciting day out at CHW Hadassim Children & Youth Village WIZO .  Accompanied by Janine Gelley, Chairperson and Avital Blumenthal Deputy Chairperson, World WIZO Organization and Tourism Division the group was welcomed by Youth Village Director, Zeev Twito. The day began on a "chirpy "note as the visitors were treated to a heartwarming vocal performance by some of the students. One of the young girl singers performed at the prize giving ceremony for the Israel Youth Awards Scheme which was held recently at the British Ambassador's house.  This high note was followed by an overview of the multitude of programs offered to the students at  WIZO Hadassim presented by various staff members. Rosalind Boxer from the UK was very impressed by the knowledgeable and well informed staff "who showed great empathy with the pupils especially those with disturbed and difficult backgrounds and took their time to talk to us and answer questions."

A tour around the youth village included a visit to the three family units for girls at risk. This was especially moving for Denise Berkowitz and her daughter Sara. Thanks to a generous donation from Denise's grandparents (Camhi family) these units were completely refurbished a few years ago.

Camhi dormitoryIt was not all fun and games, there was also some hands on volunteering with the group getting their hands dirty in the hothouse pruning the rosemary shrubs and weeding. Their hard work was rewarded with a delicious lunch in the school dining room. Last but not lest f a documentary film produced by the students for the DocAviv film festival was screened. It tells the story of Taylor Hogg, from Philadelphia who for the past 24 years has been spending 2 months of the year with the children and volunteering her services at CHW Hadassim.

A great day out was had by all. For Noomi Dessauer from Denmark this was the first time she visited a WIZO youth village " it was very interesting to see how you it operates and how the funds that are donated are spent. It was especially nice to meet the people working there and amazing to meet so dedicated people who give so much of them self to this project, very inspiring".
