Dear Chaverot,

On March 8th, we celebrate International Women's Day, an important day for women throughout the world. For us, in WIZO, International Women's Day is a real cause for celebration.

It is a celebration, for this day we also remember all the accomplishments that were made possible through the work and dedication of our WIZO Chaverot from across the world.
Over the past 68 years, our small Jewish nation has become a superpower in technology, agriculture, military and science – but Israel is also a superpower in everything that is connected to the status of women.

Already in the pioneering days during the British Mandate, women like Sarah Aaronson and Hannah Szenes gained prominence through their courageous resistance and their fight for the birth of our nation. Several women, including our own WIZO representative – Rachel Cohen-Kagan, were elected to the first Knesset. And in 1969, Israel became the third country in the world to elect a female Prime Minister – the unforgettable Golda Meir.

Many of these achievements can be linked back to the pioneering and inspiring work of our WIZO founders, who ensured the voice of women was heard in the Zionist movement. Thanks to their vision and endless efforts, women had equal roles in the establishment of the Jewish state and in shaping its future character.

Since then, WIZO has worked to create an equal society with unprecedented achievements, advancing legislation, increasing women’s representation in influential and key positions, and promoting change in Israeli society regarding the status of women.

In a region where human right abuses are commonplace, Israel is not only an exception but a miracle. This miracle we call the State of Israel would not have been the same without the devotion and commitment of our WIZO Chaverot.

We must take great pride in our own share of this marvelous achievement – for raising generations of inspired women who make Israel a better place.
For more than 96 years, we, Jewish women from across the globe have been working side by side, whether in the corridors of the United Nations, or in the WIZO Shelters for battered women, whether as mothers, or as career women, whether as volunteers or in key political positions, whether in the workplace or in the home. Our aim has always been to make a better world for women in any way possible, wherever they may be.

May we have another 100 years of inspiring and visionary WIZO work for the women of Israel and for the State of Israel.

With warmest wishes,

Dia Internacional de la Mujer 2017

Women1

Queridas javerot,
