December 07, 2016

Dear Chaverot,

As I write this, Israel is recovering from devastating fires that swept through the country, destroying thousands of dunams of land as well as hundreds of homes. The city of Haifa was the worst hit and many have lost their homes as well as been treated for shock, smoke inhalation and injuries. Our gratitude to all around the world who rallied to help us and who have set up emergency funds for much needed assistance.

In this bumper edition of Straight Facts, we say farewell to former President, Shimon Peres z"l, take an in-depth look at the recent resolutions passed by UNESCO (English & French), examine the rise of antisemitism in Britain, the rise of soft Holocaust denial and in the latest episode of Talking Tachlis, hear from Col. Olivier Rafowicz (English & French).

I also would like to invite Chaverot who speak other languages to send me any articles of interest so that I can share it amongst our global family.

I hope this serve you.

As always, your comments and feedback is welcome at rolenemarks@yahoo.com

Warm regards,

Rolene Marks

Saying farewell to former President, Shimon Peres

What could be possibly we possibly say about former President Shimon Peres z”l, that hasn’t already been said? So many magnificent tributes have poured in from all around the world for this giant of Israel, the last of our founding fathers that are befitting his dedication to the country.  It was the late President himself, who paid the most fitting tribute to his time in office:

How did Antisemitism get so bad in Britain?

Antisemitism is rising to alarming levels around the world and Britain is no exception. Over the last year we have heard alarming comments from members of the Labour party, an attack on an Israeli speaker at the University College, London and others. Read more here:

The rise of soft Holocaust denial

A very disturbing trend which can be described as “the pseudo-intellectual hijacking of the meaning of the Holocaust in pursuit of delegitimizing the Jewish state. While hard denial forces us to prove that the Holocaust happened, soft denial forces us to prove that it still matters.” Read this very important article:

Documentary of Interest: Israel’s Arab Warriors – The BBC

Israel is often accused of being an Apartheid state. Nothing could be further from the truth, in fact unlike during Apartheid South Africa, all sectors of Israeli society can serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This very interesting documentary, broadcast by the BBC features Arab soldiers who are proud to serve their country. The documentary is featured in the body of the article:
