December 24, 2015

Dore Gold is an Israeli diplomat and the 11th Israel Ambassador to the United Nations. He has served in various positions under several Israeli governments , and is the current President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. He was also an advisor to the former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his first term in office. In May 2015, Netanyahu named him Director-General of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He  explained the Government's policy and how we are developing contacts with countries in Asia and Africa, while strengthening existing international ties.

Another guest was Irving Cotler PC, OC. He  was the Member of Parliament for Mount Royal from 1999 to 2015. He was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons in a by-election in November 1999, winning 92% of votes cast. He served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 2003 until 2006 . As Minister of Justice, Cotler tabled Canada's first-ever National Justice Initiative Against Racism, in parallel with the government's National Action Plan Against Racism. In 1986 he was chief counsel to the Canadian Jewish Congress at the Deschênes Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals. He is considered an expert on international law and human rights law and  is on the Board of Advancing Human Rights

Dory Gold paid tribute to Irving Cotler and presented him with a Certificate and gift. Irving Cotler shared with us the wonderful  news that his son made aliya and is living in Jerusalem – the realization of true Zionism.

Tova met Israel's former Ambassador to Austria and Switzerland – Aviv Shir-On who is now the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He praised WIZO's representatives  in the UN in Geneva and Vienna and emphasized the close relationship he developed with them.

Tova  was seated with  ICJP representatives  from Argentina and Chile and Israel's former Ambassadors to Chile, Mexico, Brazil and Bolivia.

It is a great honour for WIZO to be invited to such events and affords Tova,  in her capacity as World WIZO President,   the platform to present WIZO's activities regarding human rights and minorities, as well as to serve as an ambassador of  public diplomacy – hasbara.
