In August, an audio-visual presentation of the life of General Sir John Monash was held at the Millwell Community Hall, Maroochydore. Sir Monash Monash is considered one of the best Allied generals of the First World War and the most famous commander in Australian history. He was the Commander of the 4th Brigade at the Battle of Gallipoli and planned the successful Allied attack at the Battle of Amiens on 8th August 1918, which expedited the end of the war. In 1927, he became president of the newly founded Zionist Federation of Australia and New Zealand. An extraordinary man. This event was to raise money for Makom BaLev in Be’er Sheva, which caters for ‘Girls at Risk’ and takes these young women off the streets and away from prostitution. It gives them an opportunity to be educated, go out into the community, and become proud of what they can achieve.

The program was presented by Mr. Denis Wayper who is well known for his many and varied presentations of famous people, including Dame Joan Sutherland.

A lot of original footage was shown of Gallipoli, The King of England knighting Sir John, the strategies he employed to minimise the loss of life, the then controversial use of tanks and aeroplanes, plus many actual battle scenes. As the very critical Battle of Amiens became a major turning point in the war this is given particular coverage.
