Helen Reisman's Story

My mother was involved in WIZO, so it was only natural that I join. I joined in 1970 when I got married and have always supported my local group in any way I can. When I was first married, I was working so I was not truly active active until I had my first baby and was 'at home'.

My first talk to my group was when my son was eight weeks' old and I spoke about my work at Marks and Spencer. There I met a group of young mothers my age – and we have been friends ever since. I remember my talk was entitled "Was there a life before nappies [diapers]?" After that, I became more and more involved – my first 'job' was the program planner for the group, I later became the area Aviv representative. Over the years I have held many positions in WIZO UK including my current position as Co-Chair, Finance.
Many of my friends support WIZO, buy tickets for our events, or make donations to specific appeals.

I would love to see more young women become involved in WIZO, but times are different now, and young women are all very involved juggling family and careers. It is the same for all organizations. I often speak to non-Jewish organizations, and they have the same problem.

I have always contributed to local community activities e.g. my synagogue and children's school, but WIZO has always been my No. 1 priority. I have visited many of our WIZO UK projects in Israel and know how important our work is to help the under-privileged children and youth in Israel and contribute towards the empowerment of women.
