One inspiring example is Hila, who today manages one of WIZO Israel’s Bigudit stores.

After escaping years of domestic violence, Hila joined WIZO Israel’s Safety Net program, where she received emotional support, vocational guidance, and a caring community that helped her rebuild her life. Today, she leads volunteers while serving the very community that once helped her stand on her own feet.

Her story reflects one of WIZO Israel’s core beliefs: meaningful support does not end when a crisis is over. It creates opportunities for people to rebuild their lives, regain confidence, and, in time, help others do the same.

Behind every Bigudit boutique is another powerful story: a community built by volunteers.

More than 1,000 volunteers, most of them women in their senior years, give their time, experience, and compassion every week. For many, Bigudit has become a second home: a place of friendship, purpose, and belonging.

This is especially meaningful for older volunteers who may be facing loneliness, grief, or major life changes. For women who have lost loved ones during the war, including sons, grandchildren, relatives, or close friends, volunteering at Bigudit can become part of a process of healing. One volunteer shared that simply getting out of the house and volunteering at Bigudit lifted her spirits. Another described the store as the place where she feels part of something larger than herself.

Bigudit also provides meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities, who volunteer and work alongside retirees, students, and community members. Every year, high school students also volunteer in the stores as part of Israel’s community involvement program, learning firsthand about responsibility, generosity, and civic engagement. Bigudit continues to grow in order to reach more communities. This July, WIZO Israel celebrated the opening of a spacious new Bigudit store in the heart of Petah Tikva, expanding access to quality fashion, affordable shopping, and meaningful community engagement.

Alongside this growth, the network has strengthened its digital presence, reaching new audiences and reshaping perceptions of second-hand fashion as a modern, sustainable, and socially conscious choice.
