Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month

Bella Abzug2

In May, America celebrates the incredible contributions of Jewish Americans throughout history, and we’ve chosen to highlight the remarkable Bella Abzug.

Bella Abzug was a prominent American lawyer, feminist, and politician who played a significant role in advancing women’s rights and social justice. Born in 1920 — coincidentally the same year WIZO was founded — she became known for her outspokenness, signature hats, and tireless advocacy for gender equality.

Abzug was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970, representing New York’s 19th congressional district, making her one of the first women to serve in Congress. She was the first Jewish woman to be elected. Her famous slogan was, “This woman’s place is in the House — the House of Representatives.” During her tenure, she championed legislation on issues such as women’s rights, civil rights, and environmental protection.

Bella was born in New York City to Russian Jewish parents. She was proud of her Jewish heritage and often spoke about how her Jewish upbringing influenced her values and commitment to social justice. Throughout her life and career, Abzug remained deeply connected to her Jewish identity and heritage.

As we honor Jewish American heritage, let’s remember Bella Abzug’s legacy and the countless other Jewish women who have shaped the world with their courage and conviction.
