The Israeli Air Force, with WIZO, launched a pilot prep program at a WIZO youth village to train and inspire diverse candidates for success in the pilot course.

A significant milestone was reached this month as the Israeli Air Force (IAF), in collaboration with WIZO, launched its first pilot preparatory program, “Derech Eretz VeShamayim” (Path of Earth and Sky).

Held at WIZO Gan Vanof youth village in central Israel, this nine-week program is part of the broader effort to prepare young men and women for the rigorous pilot course, the longest in the IDF, and to enhance their chances of success. It aims to foster resilience, teamwork, and a culture of critical feedback while building mental, social, and academic readiness.

Colonel Yaron, head of the Air Force’s Planning and Resources Department, emphasized that the program strives to create equal opportunities for all socio-economic segments of Israel’s society. He described it as the first step in a comprehensive strategy to diversify the population within the pilot training pipeline.

World WIZO Chairperson Anita Friedman:
“Hosting this program at our youth village aligns with our Zionist values.“

WIZO Chairperson Anita Friedman celebrated the partnership with the IAF, stating, “WIZO is committed to addressing the needs of Israeli society. Hosting this program at our youth village aligns with our Zionist values and pride in supporting young individuals who dream of defending our skies in the future.”

Gadi Yaakov, Head of WIZO’s Education Division, added that the collaboration highlights WIZO’s central role in shaping values within Israeli society and provides an optimal educational environment for preparing participants for both the pilot course and life in Israel.

The program also fosters connections between the IAF trainees and students at WIZO Gan Vanof. Joint activities, including a panel with female pilots and aircrew, aim to inspire young people from diverse backgrounds to pursue excellence. These interactions further support WIZO’s agenda of promoting gender equality and social impact across Israel.

The inaugural cohort includes 60 participants, including 10 women, who will receive mentorship from experienced aircrew and guidance in mathematics, physics, and personal development, all while strengthening their connection to Israel and its values.
