The Heroines of Early Childhood: A Journey of Gratitude to WIZO’s Beating Heart

There is a rare kind of magic that happens every morning in WIZO’s 160 daycare centers across Israel.

It is found in a child’s trusting smile, in the comforting scent of warm, homemade food, and in the gentle hands that guide a toddler’s first steps with care and love.

This month, as part of the Early Childhood Division’s annual Appreciation Week, WIZO leadership, representatives of the workers’ organization, and headquarters teams set out on a journey of gratitude from the north of Israel to the south. The goal was simple and deeply meaningful: to pause the daily routine, enter the daycare centers filled with children’s laughter, and look directly at the beating heart of the organization.

It was an opportunity to say thank you for work that is far more than a job. It is a delicate and profound act of shaping the next generation.

WIZO’s daycare network is not only a framework of care and education. It is a national and economic anchor. It enables thousands of parents, and especially mothers, to participate in the workforce and build their lives with the knowledge that their children are in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally enriching environment.

The broad reach of WIZO’s daycare centers also provides an essential response in Israel’s geographic and social periphery, helping ensure equal opportunity from the very first steps of life.

During the visits, WIZO honored approximately 2,500 dedicated employees who, day after day, weave together a network of security, warmth, and love for babies and toddlers.

This remarkable human mosaic includes directors who lead with vision, caregiver-educators who nurture curiosity, cooks who prepare nourishing and comforting meals, social workers who serve as a steady anchor for families, and National Service volunteers who bring with them a spirit of pure giving.

Together, they form a holistic, multidisciplinary model that sees the child and the family as a whole, supporting everything from cognitive development and balanced nutrition to the inclusion of toddlers with special needs.

For the teams in the field, this recognition provides strength for the year ahead, especially during times of complex routine, emergency, or security tension, when the daycare center becomes an island of stability for young children and their families.

A daycare director from the Jerusalem area shared her feelings during the visit:
“To manage a daycare center is to lead a remarkable human creation every morning. There is nothing more moving than seeing a toddler come in hesitantly at the start of the day, and soon after run toward the caregiver with open arms and a smile full of trust. This Appreciation Week gives us so much strength and room to breathe. Knowing that we are seen, that the heart we give and the sleepless nights we invest in the children are valued, gives us fuel for the entire year.”
