Seeking refuge in Israel during a time of war may seem paradoxical. However, for many Jewish and Zionist university students, the campus environment amid rising anti-Israel protests was increasingly distressing, anxiety-inducing, and even frightening.
My decision to come to Israel at this time was not made lightly. I pondered what my peers would think about spending a summer in a country grappling with the daily realities of war. I questioned my own safety but ultimately concluded that Israelis and the Jewish people have repeatedly demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties, I decided to fulfill my long-held plan of spending a summer in Israel. My next step was to find an internship. I sought a company or organization that aligned with my values, supported me as a student and intern, and provided opportunities for growth. I found all of this and more in the remarkable world of WIZO (Women’s International Zionist Organization).
WIZO’s dedication to supporting Israelis, especially since October 7, has been truly inspiring. One notable example is a daycare center near the main office, established in response to the increased demands on hospital workers’ time. Located across from a major hospital in Tel Aviv, the daycare center supports the families of hospital workers and others. Visiting this center, as well as the Parents Home and Nachlat Yehudah Youth Village, allowed me to witness WIZO’s impactful work firsthand.
During my internship, I had the privilege of working with various leaders in the External Relations department, contributing to WIZO’s mission. My tasks included assisting with social media projects, uploading blogs to the website, adding archival videos to the YouTube channel, managing donor data and Federation information, and brainstorming ideas for the AVIV program’s success. Meeting department members, volunteers, and Federation representatives from around the world, I witnessed their admiration for WIZO and its mission.
I am honored to have worked alongside the dedicated individuals at WIZO, gaining experience in non-profit organizations, developing a passion for WIZO’s Zionist mission, and enjoying a positive experience living and working in Israel, thanks in large part to the people and culture at WIZO. I hope to continue my involvement with WIZO in the future and am grateful for the two months I spent in Tel Aviv, beginning this journey with WIZO.
