"And they answered the angel of the Lord that stood among the Haddasim (myrtle) trees,
and said, we have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest…my house shall be built in it."
(Zechariah 1)

Dear Chaverot,

Last week, only days before the opening of the new school year, I participated in a special introductory event for our teachers and staff at CHW Hadassim Youth Village.

The event, under the theme "The 70 faces of CHW Hadassim Youth Village – Past, Present and Future", highlighted the wonderful work that has been done in this special youth village and dormitory since its inception in 1947.

Today I'm happy to share with you a letter I sent to Debbie Eisenberg, National President of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO and Alina Ianson, National Executive Director of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO about this event.

Dear Debbie and Alina,

Last Friday, thousands of our children and youngsters returned to their classrooms and school friends after a long summer break.
It was a special day, which did not only mark the opening of the new school year but signified a fresh start and a time of new challenges for many of our students.

For our pupils in CHW Hadassim Youth Village, it was the day they return to their second home.

Ahead of the first day of school, we held an introductory event for our teachers and staff at the youth village. Its theme was "The 70 faces of CHW Hadassim Youth Village – Past, Present and Future", highlighting the tremendous work that has been done in this special youth village and dormitory since its inception in 1947.

Among the guests were Rabbi Dr. Shai Piron, Avi Harari, Head of the Even Yehuda local authority, Ze'ev Twito, Director of CHW Hadassim Youth Village, and our professional staff.

Ze'ev commended his staff for the wonderful accomplishments the school and staff have achieved over the past years, which was highlighted by the Ministry of Education's ranking of Hadassim in the top 285 schools in Israel.

When I spoke, I took the opportunity of sharing with the staff just how significant their role is in the lives of our pupils. I spoke about the beginning of the school year as a landmark of hope. Every new beginning brings with it new ideas and growth. It is a fresh start for each and every one.

70 facesCHW Hadassim pic2As an educator, I am very familiar with the sense of mission our staff has when they carry out the work they do – educating and nurturing teenagers in Israel – tomorrow's citizens and our future leaders.

With this great task comes great responsibility – to find new and better ways to provide our pupils with the knowledge and skills they require in today's modern world. Alongside these efforts, we also train our staff to invest in social, educational and community education – to help each student with his and her journey through life.

It is indeed an important role to play in a young person's life. It is also an honor to take part in shaping the character and resilience of our society.

This event was wonderful - it highlighted our role as educators in the long and proud history of our CHW Hadassim Youth Village.

For seventy years, this beautiful youth village has always remained a home for pupils who needed a safe haven away from anti-Semitism abroad and for many Israeli youngsters who struggled with domestic problems and learning challenges.

I am proud of the part our professionals have played in ensuring that throughout the years, despite the natural changes in staff and pupils, the "spirit of Hadassim" has always been kept at the heart of our activities. It is the spirit that strives for creativity, curiosity, renewal, all based on the belief that dreams do come true.

Our success can be found in the dozens of thousands of graduates who came out of this wonderful youth village to become leaders in every field of Israeli society – including science, diplomacy, economy, media, art, security, law and many more.

All of this has been made possible thanks to the support, care and generosity you, our Chaverot at Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, have shown. You are our full partners in providing these youngsters an equal opportunity in education and a chance to build a better and successful life.

As the new school year has just begun, I would like to wish all of our children and youth a year of success, fulfilment and accomplishment.

Together, WIZO and Canadian Hadassah-WIZO will continue to be there every step of the way to help them turn their dreams into reality.

With warmest wishes,
