The Gift of Mobility

WIZO South Africa is actively raising its local profile by sharing technology from Israel with those in need in South Africa. Thereby strengthening the bond between our countries and its people. In response to the need for a specialised, child friendly wheelchair, on Wednesday 1 August, guided by Pete Graham (local ward councillor) WIZO Durban co-chairs; Laurienne Baitz, Michelle Nathan, Colleen Mervis together with Viv Stiller and Bev Selikow visited the semi informal settlement of Mount Moriah.

Living in poorest of poor conditions, here the ever-smiling six year Lethokule Ngcobo's life was changed forever when he was handed a brand new lightweight WIZO "Wheelchair of Hope" gifted by Bev Selikow. Lethhokule suffers from a disease of the spinal cord called Myelotadiculpathy resulting from a congenital spinal malformation, meaning he has paralysis of both legs. With his new wheelchair, his basic movement is now ensured. The day was made even more special when we realised it was his birthday the next day!

Like his name, which means Lethokule “bringing good things”, thanks to WIZO this precious "Wheelchair of Hope” has given him the gift of mobility and profoundly changed his and his family's life forever.

WIZO Johannesburg

On Thursday the 19th of July, WIZO Forum was proud to host two top media personalities, Kathy Kaler (CEO Chai FM) and Peta Krost (Editor SA Jewish Report) in an informative conversation about their lives, their interesting and often challenging jobs and their mission statements for the community. It was fascinating to hear that their readership and listenership stretches far beyond the city of Johannesburg and even the continent of Africa, and is not confined to a Jewish audience. It was a very engaging morning with lots of questions asked by the interested audience.

'Love, Lies & Abuse'- Author speaks

On Tuesday the 26th of June, an extremely successful morning was held with Author, Philippa Sklaar. She spoke about 'Love, Lies & Abuse', and was organised by WIZO Johannesburg’s Women Inspired branch. The audience listened in silent shock as Philippa shared her own story and spoke about what life is like for abused women the world over - possibly even women one knows. One of the main goals of World WIZO is the empowerment of women, and Philippa educated a room full of women on what it means to be abused, why abused women find it so difficult to leave their abusers and what can be done to help someone who might be in a similar situation. It was an enlightening morning. Thank you to all who joined us and to Philippa for sharing her story and insight.

WIZO Johannesburg:

Annual Golf Day

On Tuesday the 14th of August, WIZO Johannesburg hosted their annual Golf Day at the Killarney Country Club. The Stenham Trust sponsored the day and Amrod sponsored give-aways for each player. Everyone was in good spirits thanks to the gin and tonic served by Fitch and Leeds. The women of the Etgar branch did a great job arranging the day and they bid farewell to Zee Bergman, the main organiser of the Golf Day, who is going to live in Cape Town. The weather was beautiful and the golfers had a wonderful day!
