Eulogy for Ruth Rappaport: A Great Leader and Supporter of Israel

Ruth Rappaport, who was active in WIZO for over fifty years, was a formidable leader and a great supporter of Israel.

"Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all." (Proverbs 31, 29)

This week WIZO lost a great leader and supporter of the State of Israel.

I was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Ruth Rappaport z"l, a formidable leader who worked tirelessly for the needs of the people of Israel, who she loved so dearly.

Ruth, who immigrated to Israel in 1933, later settled in Switzerland where her long and inspiring journey with WIZO began. She was active in WIZO for over fifty years, serving as Chairperson of WIZO Geneva for 17 of those years.

In recent years, Ruth served as the Associate Chairperson of the International Council of WIZO worldwide. In her role as Chairperson, she focused on raising and investing funds, as well as establishing six Day Care Centers in Sderot Haifa, Jerusalem, Nesher.

In Sderot, she built together with her late husband, Bruce Rappaport z"l, the very first state-of-the-art rocket proof Day Care Centre.

Ruth was not only involved in these projects from their initial planning stages through their establishment and launch, but remained involved in their ongoing activities. Her prophetic words “The future lies in our children and families and any amount collected today will bear fruits for future generations," reflected her own deeply-rooted Zionism and personal vision, which was so typical of the WIZO ethos to which we aspire.

I had the honor to meet her several times. One of these occasions was at our 2015 WIZO's Meeting of Representatives, where she presented to me her memoir book, which she signed in Hebrew: "To Rivka, A souvenir from my life".

To this day, I keep her book in my office, a treasured token from a great and wise lady, who together with her late husband Bruce Rappaport z"l, led an extraordinary life of dedication and contribution to the lives of so many people.

Ruth was always a force for good, and in her passing, her memory and legacy will forever bring support and smiles to the children of Israel.

יהי זכרה ברוך

May her memory be for blessing.
